In order not to be bound to a fixed space, Maarten Schuurman is a (preventive) squatter, moving from one address to another. To maximize his sense of freedom he reduced his earthly possessions to be able to fit into six suitcases. Cookware, books, records, musical equipment, clothing, toiletries; it all fits in this Living Unit.
To choose only what he most needed, Schuurman made an inventory of his belongings. Who am I, what is my space, what makes me who I am, what do I need? This led to the essence, the core of his existence. Having formerly felt restricted by possession, now that he has liberated himself from material things he has taken back control. He describes this process as Self Design: the reprogramming of his daily life.
