‘Stranglehold’ came about after a descent into the Polish coal mine Wujek. Miners – “workers of the fire” as Danaë Moons calls them – are in direct contact with the Earth. This is in contrast to modern humans who are becoming increasingly estranged from nature and more dependent on consumer products that are forced on us. With ‘Stranglehold’, Moons refers to a physical power play, to our lack of awareness of the surrounding nature, and the destructive effect that this has. Are we capable of letting go of these forces that threaten the survival of the Earth and humanity?
